Intel Shows Off Its Smart Phone and Tablet for 2012

  • Wednesday, December 21, 2011
  • By Tom Simonite
Missing out: Intel isn’t among the leading companies in the fast-growing market for smart-phone processors, which all license designs from UK-based ARM Holdings.
Credit: Technology Review
One feature that stood out was the camera's "burst mode," which captures 10 full-size eight-megapixel images at a rate of 15 per second. Smith says that feature rests on a combination of image-processing circuits built into the Medfield chip and dedicated software tweaks on top, technology that comes in part from Intel's acquisition of the Dutch image-processing company Silicon Hive earlier this year. This kind of hardware could help apps developed for augmented reality.
Intel's reference tablet, which used the same Medfield chip as the phone, was running the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. It had a slightly larger screen than the iPad 2 but was about the same in thickness and weight. A limited trial suggested that it was noticeably nicer to use than older tablets based on the abandoned Honeycomb version of Android.
Intel has tried to gain traction in mobile devices before, but those efforts were unsuccessful. In the immediate aftermath of the iPhone's meteoric rise, the company focused on netbooks and mobile Internet device—computers larger than smart phones that never became popular. A long-term effort to develop an open-source mobile operating system to rival Android, called Meego, was scrapped earlier this year when partner Nokia signed a deal with Microsoft to use Windows instead.
It seems Intel has been hampered by both technical and business-strategy problems that come with trying to change the course of such a large company. It took time for engineers to find a way to compress their usual three-chip design into a single system-on–a-chip, says Smith, and to help Google make Android work on Intel chips. Now Intel finally has a chip that can match and even surpass established mobile chips. "Now we have this in place, we can accelerate," Smith says. "We haven't been able to show a production-grade design before."
Intel has tested its reference handset against a handful of the leading phones on sale today. It says these tests show that Medfield offers faster browsing and graphics performance and lower power consumption than the top three, says Smith.
Linley Gwennap, an analyst with the Linley Group, says it's very significant that Intel is finally offering a fully integrated system-on-a-chip. "It should make Intel more competitive—they're kind of at the same level as anyone now," he says. Gwennap adds that Medfield chips use more advanced technology than the established competition, which means the chip's features are much smaller. That helps improve power consumption and processing power. "Medfield is based on 32-nanometer technology, while the biggest fabs making ARM-based processors are today shipping either 40 or 45 nanometers," he says.
That lead is likely to disappear as ARM-based processors catch up in the next year, but Smith says that Intel will start making mobile processors using 22-nanometer technology in 2013. Manufacturers of ARM-based chips say they plan to make that jump in 2014. Gwennap says this next generation will give Intel its best hope of grabbing a significant chunk of a new market: "I expect they'll get into a few phones with Medfield, and then it will be the 22-nanometer chip that really makes a difference."
However, Gwennap notes that Intel could lag behind in other ways. Although it has caught up by integrating everything a processor needs into a single chip, established mobile chip makers like Qualcomm are already going a step further by incorporating the usually separate wireless modem chip, resulting in even further efficiency gains. Smith says Intel isn't ready to talk about when it might also make that step.

New laser technology could kill viruses and improve DVDs

New laser technology could kill viruses and improve DVDs
A team led by a professor at the University of California, Riverside Bourns College of Engineering has made a discovery in semiconductor nanowire laser technology that could potentially do everything from kill viruses to increase storage capacity of DVDs.

Ultraviolet semiconductor diode lasers are widely used in data processing, information storage and biology. Their applications have been limited, however, by size, cost and power. The current generation of ultraviolet lasers is based on a material called gallium nitride, but Jianlin Liu, a professor of electrical engineering, and colleagues have made a breakthrough in zinc oxide nanowire waveguide lasers, which can offer smaller sizes, lower costs, higher powers and shorter wavelengths.

Until now, zinc oxide nanowires couldn't be used in real world light emission applications because of the lack of p-type, or positive type, material needed by all semiconductors. Liu solved that problem by doping the zinc oxide nanowires with antimony, a metalloid element, to create the p-type material.

The p-type zinc oxide nanowires were connected with n-type, or negative type, zinc oxide material to form a device called p-n junction diode. Powered by a battery, highly directional laser light emits only from the ends of the nanowires.

"People in the zinc oxide research community throughout the world have been trying hard to achieve this for the past decade," Liu said. "This discovery is likely to stimulate the whole field to push the technology further".

Liu's findings have been reported in the recent issue of Nature Nanotechnology Co-authors are: Sheng Chu, Guoping Wang, Jieying Kong, Lin Li and Jingjian Ren, all graduate students at UC Riverside; Weihang Zhou, a student at Fudan University in China; Leonid Chernyak, a professor of physics at the University of Central Florida; Yuqing Lin, a graduate student at the University of Central Florida; and Jianze Zhao, a visiting student from Dalian University of Technology in China.

The discovery could have a wide-range of impacts.

For information storage, the zinc oxide nanowire lasers could be used to read and process much denser data on storage media such as DVDs because the ultraviolet has shorter wavelength than other lights, such as red. For example, a DVD that would store two hours of music could store four or six hours using the new type of laser.

For biology and medical therapeutics, the ultra-small laser light beam from a nanowire laser can penetrate a living cell, or excite or change its function from a bad cell to a good cell. The light could also be used to purify drinking water.

For photonics, the ultraviolet light could provide superfast data processing and transmission. Reliable small ultraviolet semiconductor diode lasers may help develop ultraviolet wireless communication technology, which is potentially better than state-of-the-art infrared communication technologies used in various electronic information systems.

While Liu and the students in his laboratory have demonstrated the p-type doping of zinc oxide and electrically powered nanowire waveguide lasing in the ultraviolet range, he said more work still needs to be done with the stability and reliability of the p-type material.

What is  SEO ( Search Engine Optimization )

In order to generate ad revenue, a site needs a lot of visitors. Visitors can be acquired via paid advertizing or they can be referred to a site for free by search engines. In order to get visitors by search engines, a site has to be ranked higher in search results. The process of optimizing a site to be ranked higher on Google or any other search engine is called search engine optimization or SEO for short. This SEO tutorial for beginners gives you SEO tips and SEO techniques  to learn SEO that can help in getting your website better rankings on search engines.
SEO tutorial for beginners SEO tips SEO tools

SEO assumptions for beginners

First lets look at various assumptions. We believe that unless these assumptions are met good SEO may not be easily achieved.

Site should contain unique content for better SEO

That is, the site should not contain content that’s already present on another site. It is generally a beginners mistake to copy content from other sites and try to get it ranked higher in search engines. No matter how much of an SEO is done, non unique content will never outrank original content.

Site should be aged

That means it should not be a very new website. If its fairly new it does not mean that  SEO will not help but it just might take sometime before search engines give good results. Beginners should be patient as it takes up to 6 months for search engines to start ranking new sites in the search results.

Learn SEO steps and SEO tips and SEO techniques ( Tutorial for Beginners )

Here we look at the list of SEO steps and techniques with examples to understand how SEO can be increased on any website. Try to follow these SEO tips to be successful in getting your site high Google rankings.

Identify SEO friendly keyword

Identify a SEO friendly keyword that your target audience is searching for in the search engines. Make sure that your domain name has that necessary keyword in it. This is not a huge deal but it is good to have from SEO perspective. Do not get a domain name which is too large as visitors should be able to remember it. If they remember it, they can easily come back. Most beginners make the mistake of not picking a relevant domain name.

Use redirection for better SEO

Use of redirection from one web page to another if two pages serve the same content. This is considered great optimization from Google SEO perspective.
For example: Note that www.teknocrat.com is a subdomain for teknocrat.com. These are two different URLs pointing to same home page. Therefore it is recommended to have one redirect to another. This helps search engines treat them as one and achieves better SEO. It is generally a beginners misconception that more pages means more visitors. This is only true if the pages are serving different content. All beginners should understand 301 redirects mechanism to achieve redirection. As a test try to type teknocrat.com in your browser and you will be taken to www.teknocrat.com right away.
Details on how to perform redirection can be found here.

Find relevant keywords for any content for good SEO

Find good keywords for any new content on the site. This would give an idea on what keywords should be targeted for the next post.
For example: If you are writing about electronics, your keyword can’t just be electronics rather it could be “Latest electronics news” or “Tutorial on I phone hardware”. Of course the keyword should match the content of your site or post. This is one of the most important SEO factor often overlooked by beginners.

Use meta tags

Definitely use meta tags on your pages for good SEO for Google. There are two important tags used for SEO purposes, one is Keywords tag and other is Description tag. The Keywords should include the content keywords and description should in general include what the page is about. In HTML they look like this:
<meta name="description" content="SEO for Beginners"/>;<meta name="keywords" content="SEO,Google,beginners,quick" />

Pick a good SEO friendly title

A title tag is one of the most relevant indicators of content to search engines and hence has high SEO significance. A title should contain all the relevant keywords. A page title is shown on search results as well as on top of Firefox/Mozilla browsers while browsing the page.

Use Sitemaps for helping search engines locate your content

It takes time for search engines to discover new pages of a site. Even Google might take some time to discover them. If you have a sitemap then search engines can use it to discover pages much faster.  After creating a Google webmaster account upload your sitemap there. This step is quite important for Google SEO. Remember that good Google SEO means very large number of visitors to your website as Google will send most visitors to your website.

Get Backlinks as it is most important for SEO

SEO link building is probably the most important step for SEO. Beginners should understand that Back links cannot be gained overnight. This is a rather slow process.
There are 2 types of back links: follow and nofollow. The ones that are nofollow do not help with respect to Google rankings while the ones that are follow do help. With that said nofollow are not that bad if placed in relevant blogs. Visitors can click on these nofollow back links to get to your site. You can differentiate between a follow and nofollow link with help of Search Status Firefox add on. To get back links, find blogs that are about your market/niche and comment on those. Google alert is an excellent tool that can search and send you blogs relevant to your niche.

Make webpages load faster for better experience by users and bots

Recently website load speed has become a factor for SEO. Install page speed plug-in on Mozilla/firefox browser and test your page speed. Try to get a score in 80s out of 100 as a benchmark. Check speeds of other similar sites also to get an idea.

Block irrelevant content via robots.txt

Any content that is not relevant or optimized should be blocked from search engines using robots.txt. Beginners should spend a little time in trying to understand the syntax for robots.txt.

Tattoos In Flight: The Boldest, Most Bad-Ass Airplane Body Ink

<< Previous | Next >>
Helicopter Homage

As any self-respecting ink aficionado knows, every tattoo tells a story. And based on the incredible array of tattoos on display at Tattoos In Flight, a website dedicated to aviation tats, plenty of those stories have their origins in the air.
Ryan Keough, the site's founder, is both a professional pilot and an avid tattoo wearer. In fact, it was his own growing collection of aviation body art -- Keough's entire back is an homage to the sky, from a portrait of Icarus to soaring birds to "The Spirit of Propulsion" surrounded by clouds -- that inspired him to start an aviation tattoo hub online.
When he launched the site in 2008, Keough didn't think he'd get many contributions, largely because the aviation community he knew was “very conservative.” But Keough was wrong. “I think that aviation is more than just a career or hobby for people… it becomes a lifestyle that encompasses everything within a person’s life,” he tells Danger Room. “As a result, the imagery of aviation is a natural inspiration for enthusiasts.”
Since launching the website in 2008, Keough has collected hundreds of aviation tattoos, many of them military in theme. And from World War II bombers to ultra-sleek reconnaissance jets, Danger Room has dug through the archives of Tattoos in Flight to offer up the best, boldest and most bad-ass military aircraft tats.

Helicopter Homage

The UH-1 Iroqois, better known as “The Huey,” played a vital role during the Vietnam War, when 7,000 of the helicopters saw service. Fifty years later, the helicopters are still used by American personnel in Afghanistan.
This epic tat portrays four of The Hueys, flying in formation, as they did during Vietnam to get troops in and out of dense jungle. Above the helicopters is a quote from Leonardo da Vinci: “Once having tasted flight, you will walk this earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you long to return.”
